Job Description
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Team Leader to oversee and manage ocean freight export and import operations for the Canada and US trade lanes. The role involves leading a team, ensuring compliance with international trade regulations, optimizing operational efficiency, and delivering excellent service to clients.
Key Responsibilities:
Team Management & Leadership
Lead, guide, and mentor a team handling Canada and US ocean export/import shipments.
Allocate work, monitor team performance, and ensure KPIs are met (timeliness, accuracy, compliance).
Provide training and support to team members on documentation, systems, and process improvements.
Operations Management
Oversee day-to-day ocean freight operations for both import and export shipments (FCL/LCL).
Ensure accurate preparation, verification, and submission of shipping and customs documents (MBL, HBL, ISF, AES, Commercial Invoice, Packing List, etc.).
Coordinate with shipping lines, co-loaders, customs brokers, truckers, and overseas agents.
Track and monitor shipments to ensure timely delivery and resolve exceptions proactively.
Ensure compliance with US & Canada customs regulations, CBP, CBSA, FMC, and company policies.
Client & Vendor Coordination
Act as escalation point for client queries and service issues.
Build strong relationships with customers, overseas partners, and vendors.
Negotiate with carriers and vendors to achieve cost savings and service efficiency.
Reporting & Process Improvement
Prepare weekly/monthly operational and performance reports.
Analyze trade lane performance and identify areas for improvement.
Support management in implementing best practices and process automation.
Requirements
Bachelors degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, International Business, or related field.
5+ years of experience in ocean freight forwarding (imports & exports), with at least 2 years in a team lead or supervisory role.
In-depth knowledge of US & Canada customs compliance, FMC regulations, and INCOTERMS.
Hands-on experience with ocean freight documentation, bookings, and international shipping regulations.
Proficiency in logistics ERP systems, MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
Strong leadership, people management, and communication skills.
Problem-solving mindset with the ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
Sharp attention to detail and good English speaking skills.
Preferred Skills
Experience in both LCL & FCL shipments.
Knowledge of bonded warehouses, IPI cargo, and intermodal movements in North America.
Exposure to global freight forwarding systems (Logisys, Cargowise, BluJay, SAP, etc.).
