Job Description

Engineering Manager – Data (Remote)

ChartRequest is growing fast—and our need for structured, scalable, and intelligent data management is growing even faster. We’re looking for a hands-on Data Engineering Manager to lead a team responsible for the data infrastructure that powers our healthcare information exchange platform. This is a highly technical and strategic role focused on leading the design, optimization, and governance of our data systems across engineering, product, and analytics.

If you’re an expert in PostgreSQL, passionate about data architecture, and ready to build and mentor a world-class data engineering team, this could be your next great opportunity.

What You’ll Do as a Data Engineering Manager at ChartRequest:

Lead and scale a team of developers and data engineers responsible for maintaining and evolving our data platforms, models, and pipelines.
Design and optimize our PostgreSQL-based data architecture for performance, reliability, and scale.
Own and improve our data management lifecycle, including data modeling, warehousing, governance, observability, quality, and access control.
Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering, product, compliance, and executive teams to ensure our data stack supports strategic goals and operational excellence.
Establish standards for ETL/ELT pipelines, data lineage, and documentation to ensure transparency and trust in our data.
Drive the adoption of best practices in data privacy, compliance, and security—especially as it relates to PHI and HIPAA/HITRUST requirements.
Partner with DevOps to manage data infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and automation where possible.
Lead and facilitate weekly LVL10 departmental meetings, support OKRs and quarterly planning, and ensure accountability across your team.
Guide technical strategy while remaining an active contributor when needed—particularly around SQL optimization and data integration strategies.
What We’re Looking For:

7–10 years of professional experience in software and/or data engineering roles.
3+ years of management experience leading data teams or engineering teams with a strong data focus.
Deep expertise in SQL (particularly PostgreSQL), with a history of query and schema optimization at scale.
Strong understanding of enterprise data architecture, database design, indexing strategies, and normalization/denormalization tradeoffs.
Hands-on experience with data governance, lineage tracking, compliance auditing, and security controls in cloud environments.
Background working in AWS environments and experience with relevant services like RDS, S3, Glue, Lambda, etc.
Comfort acting as a technical leader and coach, capable of translating complex data challenges into action plans for a team.
Excellent communicator who can translate technical decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Strong alignment with our PATH values: Polite & respectful problem-solving, Accountability, Trustworthiness, and Helpful collaboration.
Nice to Have:

Familiarity with HIPAA, SOC 2, HITRUST, or similar compliance frameworks.
Exposure to healthcare data standards (e.g., HL7, FHIR).
Experience working with event-based architectures and streaming data platforms (e.g., Kafka, Kinesis).
Background in application or product development with a strong understanding of how data flows through SaaS environments.
Experience with modern ETL/ELT frameworks, data orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow), and warehousing systems (e.g., Redshift, Snowflake, BigQuery, or similar).
