What you’ll do
Job Title: Shift In-charge / Shift Engineer – Main Plant + BOP
Location: Nigeria- Site Location
Power Plant Capacity: 3000 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant.
Job Purpose:
To ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of both Main Plant (Gas Turbine, Steam Turbine, HRSG) and Balance of Plant (BOP) systems during the assigned shift in a 3000 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant. The role involves real-time decision-making, coordination with field teams, compliance with safety and environmental norms, and effective shift management.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Control & Monitoring
Operate and monitor all plant systems via DCS/SCADA including GT, ST, HRSG, and BOP systems
Execute start-up, loading, shutdown (cold, warm, hot) as per SOPs
Ensure optimum plant performance within design parameters and operational limits
BOP System Management
Oversee operation of Cooling Tower, Water Treatment (DM/RO), Compressed Air, Fuel Handling, Fire Protection, HVAC systems
Ensure proper interface between Main Plant and auxiliary systems for seamless operation
Shift Supervision
Lead shift operations and supervise control room and field operators
Conduct daily shift briefings, assign responsibilities, and ensure smooth shift handover
Coordinate with maintenance during breakdowns or planned activities
Emergency & Trip Handling
Manage plant upsets, trips, and black start conditions efficiently
Conduct root cause analysis (RCA) for faults and implement corrective actions
Ensure compliance with Grid Code and SLDC dispatch instructions
Permit to Work (PTW) & Safety Compliance
Issue and authorize Permit to Work (PTW) and ensure LOTO procedures are followed
Adhere to plant safety standards and promote a culture of zero incidents
Participate in HSE audits, toolbox talks, and safety drills
Reporting & Documentation
Maintain shift logbooks, trip reports, and daily operational summaries
Monitor and report plant KPIs such as Heat Rate, Auxiliary Power Consumption, Specific Fuel Consumption, etc.
Assist in regulatory and internal audits by ensuring proper documentation.
Technical Skills
Hands-on experience in CCPP operations (GT, ST, HRSG)
Strong command over DCS/SCADA systems (e.g., Siemens T3000, ABB, GE Mark VIe)
In-depth understanding of BOP systems and plant auxiliaries
Knowledge of PTW, LOTO, and HSE systems
Basic troubleshooting skills for mechanical/electrical/instrumentation issues
Managerial Skills
Shift team leadership and coordination
Quick decision-making in emergencies
Strong communication and reporting skills
Coordination with maintenance, SLDC, and management
Qualifications & Experience
Educational Qualification: B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical / Electrical – Engineering
Experience:
1015 years (for Shift Incharge)
Minimum 10+ years experience in a Combined Cycle Power Plant of 1000 MW or more
Certifications (Preferred):
Boiler Operation Engineer (BOE)
PTW / Safety certifications
DCS Training Certification

Working Terms:
Sterling is a group of companies and as per the Nigeria Labour law, we have a limited quota for expats. As we are a multi-company group, we have a limited expat quota available to each company. Therefore, wherever the quota is available, accordingly we issue the appointment letter to the candidate on behalf of that company.
Time-off Rotation will be 6 Month working and 21 Days off if posted in Lagos, 6 months ON 30 days OFF, if posted in Plant/Site. & subsequently followed by every 6 months once (with International & Domestic air ticket provided by the company)
Workdays & Hours Six and half days work
First salary will be released after 60 Days followed by the salary cycle (Ex: If you join in July, you will get first month salary in September then after that every month you will get regularly)Petroexcel Technology
